3.1.1 OMCI Principles
This topic describes the OMCI principles.
Optical network termination management and control interface (OMCI) is the ONT management
and control interface protocol defined in ITU-T G.984.4. OMCI defines the format and the
mechanism of the interactive messages between the OLT and the ONT. OMCI analyzes the
service model of the ONT and defines a series of management entities used for the service
description.
OMCI defines the packet format of the message interaction between the OLT and the ONT and
the mechanism of confirmation and retransmission. In this way, the OMCI provides a logical
channel for communication. After adopting the OMCI protocol, the OLT supports the
management and configuration of various ONTs, the offline configuration of the ONT, and the
configuration recovery of the online ONT. Based on this mechanism, the ONT does not need to
save the configuration information locally. This helps to provision services and maintain the
terminal.
3.1.2 Setting Up the OMCI Channel
This topic describes how to set up the OMCI channel.
Context
The process of setting up the OMCI channel between the OLT and the ONT is performed
automatically and no manual operation is required.
Procedure
Step 1
After being powered on, the ONT interacts with the OLT through the physical layer OAM
(PLOAM) message to complete the registration.
Step 2
From the received PLOAM message, the OLT knows whether the ONT supports the OMCI
protocol. If the ONT supports the OMCI protocol, the OMCI channel between the OLT and the
ONT can be set up.
Step 3
After the OMCI channel is set up between the OLT and the ONT, the OLT transmits the
configuration and management information about the ONT to the ONT through the OMCI
channel, and the ONT uploads its status and alarm information to the OLT through the OMCI
channel.
