5. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
5.1.
SPEED MEASUREMENT WITHOUT CONTACT (RPM)
1. Cut a piece of reflective tape of
approx 12mm
in length.
2. Wipe off oil or stains from the surface where the reflective tape will be sticked.
3. Stick the self-adhesive reflective tape onto the object whose rotational speed is to be
measured. The reflective tape should be attached as close as possible to the outer
edge of the object to be measured. The non-reflective area should be always bigger
than the reflective area.
4. If the shaft surface is normally reflective by nature, cover it with black tape or black
paint before sticking the reflective tape.
5. Remove the mechanical adapter (see Fig. 1
– part 1) from the instrument.
6. Turn on the instrument by pressing the
/MEAS
key.
7. Press the
MODE
key and select “RPM, HZ, HZ, M/M, I/M, F/M or Y/M” modes on the
display (see § 4.2.2)
8. Press and hold the
/MEAS
key and direct the red laser onto the reflective tape
sticked to the object to be tested (see Fig. 2) and perform measurement maintaining a
distance from the object between 50mm and 500mm.
9. Release the
/MEAS
key to end the measurement. The “HOLD” symbol appears
automatically on the display in order to freeze the measured result.
10. Press the
MEM
key to save the measured result (see § 4.2.3).
Fig. 2: Speed measurement without contact (RPM)
5.1.1. Measurement on slowly rotating objects
If the rotating speed of the object being tested is very slow, it is recommended to use a
tripod to hold the tachoinstrument in place and use multiple pieces of tape for more accurate
results. If multiple pieces of tape are used, each piece of tape should be located at the same
distance to each other on the object. Any number of pieces of tape are acceptable, but the
reading needs to be divided by the number of pieces sticked to obtain the correct result.
Example
: 4 pieces of tape sticked and reading is 12RPM
Correct Speed is 12 / 4 = 3RPM
