Use scenarios
Depending on the needs of your business, you can con fi gure the Data Protection Storage Server for use
in a local area network (LAN) environment or for use across a wide-area network (WAN) environment. In
both cases, the Data Protection Storage Server provides end-users with the ability to restore data across
the network without the intervention of a system administrator.
The following
fi gures show two example deployment scenarios. Figure 1 shows a typical Data Protection
Storage Server deployment in a small-to-medium business environment. In this example, the Data
Protection Storage Server provides backup services and snapshot capability for local, LAN-attached
fi le servers.

Figure 2 shows a typical Data Protection Storage Server deployment in a centralized branch of fi ce
environment with fi le servers connected remotely through a WAN. Note that in this scenario the Data
Protection Storage Server could physically reside in a centralized location and take snapshots of fi le
servers in branch of
fi ces worldwide.
