AP #4 [AirportNet] compares its RF Group Name with AP
#N [
none
]. Since AP #N is not in the AirportNet RF Group, AP #1 will not
consider reducing power for AP #N.
Results with RF Group Name
In this configuration, both AP #1 and AP #4 will both reduce power as needed
to avoid interfering with each other.
Airport Model Analysis
The RF Group provides the network administrator with a mechanism to
identify all the APs in an administrative domain. The APs in the RF Group will
apply adaptive power control as needed to avoid interfering with each other
while ignoring APs outside their administrative domain.
Whether to model a deployment after Case 1 or Case 2 depends on the desired
behavior of the network. It may be desirable to have greater coverage for APs
that support SSIDs that are not supported elsewhere in the network. In Case 1,
the absence of an RF Group Name allows the only AP supporting Boingo to
operate at full power. If this is desired then it’s fine to have no RF Group
configured.
At the same time, AP #1 could be explicitly configured to ignore the other
Airport APs in its calculations by placing it in an RF Group of its own. This is
arguably a clearer way to achieve the same behavior.
In any case, the ability to define RF Groups gives the network administrator
explicit control over behavior independently of the SSIDs being served.
