12 Terminology
Equalisation charging
An equalisation charging is a specific form of continued charging in
order to achieve complete conversion of the active mass in all cells with
certainty.
Battery
The battery comprises one cell or multiple cells connected to one another.
Battery system
The totality of the block batteries wired together in the battery carrier.
Battery inverter/Battery charger
A battery charger or battery inverter is a device that is used to charge and/
or discharge accumulators.
Block battery
The block battery is a battery that consists of multiple cells accommoda-
ted in a block box.
Carrier
The battery carrier is a sheet steel structure that is used to protect and
house the batteries.
Commissioning date
The date on which the batteries have been put into operation after assem-
bly in the factory.
Capacity
The capacity of a battery is the quantity of electricity that can be drawn
under the respective conditions (states of charge). It is primarily depen-
dent on the discharge current and the temperature.
Open-circuit voltage
The open-circuit voltage available at an unloaded battery at the latest
24 hours after the previous charging or discharging operation.
Cell
A cell is the smallest unit of a battery. It primarily consists of a positive
and a negative electrode and the separators, the parts that are necessary
for assembly and connection, the cell/block container and the electrolyte.
Central degasification
Central degasification is a connection of the various cells of a block batte-
ry with the help of which the gases formed while charging are routed via a
diaphragm valve into the ambient air.
