About Air Sanders and Sanding Discs

While an extremely useful tool, air sanders can be dangerous

if damaged or used improperly.

1.  Sanding Discs are made of aggregates of a cutting material

(grit) such as Aluminum Oxide bound to a heavy paper or cloth

backing.

2.  Sanding discs come in different sizes, speed ranges and grit

sizes.

3.  This sander is designed to accept 6” diameter sanding discs,

with a PSA (Pressure Sensitive Adhesive) backing designed

to attach to the hook surface of the Backing pad (23). Do not

use discs of any other size or type.

4.  This sander has a maximum speed of 10,000 RPM.

WARNING: Do not use a sanding disc which is not rated

for at least this speed. Using lower speed rated discs at

higher speed may cause the sanding disc to come apart

and be ejected from the sander at high speed, possibly

causing severe personal or property damage.

5.  Sanding discs are identified by the material which makes up the grit, the recommended workpiece

material, and a grit number which indicates the coarseness of the grit. Lower numbers are more coarse.

Coarse grits cut faster, but leave a rough surface. Finer grits (higher grit numbers) cut more slowly,

but leave a more finished surface. Select the grit which is appropriate to the job at hand. Usually, you

will start with a coarse grit, then re-sand with progressively finer grits until the desired surface finish is

achieved.

6.  During use, sanding discs will become worn, and may tear. Wheels which are damaged in this way will

usually cause the sander to vibrate.

When the sanding disc is worn or torn, stop work and replace

the disc.

Using the Sander

Before using the Sander, be sure all work area safety precautions are being observed. Be sure to wear

ANSI-approved eye protection.

1.  Examine the Sanding disc before use.  Check for excessively worn spots, tears, and any other damage.

Do not use a damaged disc.

1.     Start the tool, and place it flat on the workpiece. Keep a firm grip on the tool.
2.     Guide the tool back and forth over the work piece in a steady motion. Do not press down, but allow the

weight of the tool to do the work. Be careful not to over-sand in one area or round off corners. Keep

the tool moving, and check your work as you go.

CAUTION: This tool is not designed for wet sanding. Do not use water or other lubricants while

sanding with this tool.

 NOTE:

Do not cover the exhaust ports while the tool is in use. This will reduce the efficiency of the tool,

and may cause damage.
