Gibs
3. test after each adjustment until the backlash
meets the needs of the operator and opera-
tion.
Note:
Avoid the temptation to overtighten the
socket head cap screw. Overtightening will
cause excessive wear to the sliding block
and lead screw.
cross Feed
backlash
Backlash is the amount of play found in a lead
screw. it can be found by turning the cross slide
handwheel in one direction, and then turning the
handwheel the other direction. When the cross
slide begins to move, the backlash has been
taken up.
To remove excessive backlash:
1. unplug the lAthe!
2. tighten the socket head cap screw in small
increments (see
Figure 84).

the saddle, cross feed, compound rest, and
tailstock gibs can all be adjusted on the Model
g0554 lathe.
Note:
When adjusting gibs, keep in mind that the
goal of gib adjustment is to remove sloppiness
without causing the slides to bind. Loose gibs
may cause poor finishes on the workpiece and
may cause undue wear on the slide. Over-tighten-
ing may cause premature wear on the slide, lead
screw, and nut.
To adjust the saddle gib:
1. loosen four hex nuts found at the bottom rear
of the cross slide and back off one full turn
each (see
Figure 85).
