Testing Diodes
Use the diode test to check diodes, tr ansistors, and other s e mi conductor devi ces. Th e diode test sends a cur rent through
the semi conductor junction , and then measures the voltage drop a cross the jun ction. A good silicon junction drops
between 0.5V and 0.8 V.
To test a diode out of a cir cuit, conne ct the M eter as follows:
7. Insert the red test lead into the

9. For forw ard voltag e drop r eadings on any s e mi conductor co mponent, pla ce th e red test l ead on the component’s
anode and pl ace the black test le ad on the co mponent’ s c athode.
The me asured valu e shows on the display.
Note
l
In a circuit, a good diode should still produce a fo rwa rd voltage drop reading of 0.5V to 0.8V; however , the reve rse
voltage drop c an v ary d epending on the r esistance of other pathways between the probe tips.
l
Connect the test le ads to the proper ter minals as said abov e to avoid erro r display.
l
The LCD will display
OL
indicating op en-circuit for wrong conne ction.
l
The unit o f diode is Volt ( V), displaying the positive-conn ection voltag e-drop value .
l
When diode testing has been co mpleted , disconnect the conne ction between the t esting leads and the circuit under
test.
