7. Hold the flats on the free end of the diaphragm shaft
with a wrench. Loosen and remove the fluid side sup-
port plate (8) on the other side of the pump. Disas-
semble the diaphragm assembly as in step 6.
8. Clean all parts thoroughly. Check for wear or damage
and replace parts as needed. Lubricate the parts with
light motor oil for easier reassembly. On each fluid
side support plate (8), grease the rounded side which
faces the diaphragm.
9. Place a stop (5) on the shaft so the slots face into the
pump housing (2). Install the air side support plate (6)
so the rounded side faces out. Install the backup dia-
phragm (53, Models 220–545 and 220–546 only),
and the diaphragm (7) so the side marked AIR SIDE
faces the plate (6). Install the fluid side support plate
(8). See Fig. 7.

10. Install the diaphragm on the other side of the pump in
the same way.
11. Align the holes in the diaphragm with the holes in the
flanges of the housing (2). Then, without losing the
alignment, torque the fluid side support plates (8) to
42–47 N.m (30–35 ft–lb).
12. Position the diaphragm covers (1 1) over the dia-
phragms so the cover arrows (
Y
) point
upward. Also
align the holes in the diaphragm, housing and cover.
CAUTION
Be very careful when installing the cover bolts that
you do not twist the diaphragm. Twisting the dia-
phragm prevents it from
sealing between the
cover and housing and the pump will leak.
13. Loosely install the longer cover bolts (3, or 55 on
Models), and the legs (12 and 13), washers (16)
and nuts (15) to the bottom of the cover.
14. Loosely install the bolts (14, or 3 on
Models),
with washers and nuts, to the cover (11).
15. Using an opposite and alternate pattern, torque the
bolts evenly to 13.5–16 N.m (9.8–12 ft–lb). On
Models 220–545 and 220–546, torque the bolts (55)
securing the legs to 13.5–16 N.m (9.8–12 ft–lb);
torque the other cover bolts (3) to 27 N.m (20 ft–lb).
16. Be sure the mating surfaces of the pump housing
and the manifolds are clean.
17. Working on the inlet side (bottom) first (arrow on dia-
phragm cover will face down), install an o–ring (17),
ball (19), valve seat plate (18) and another o–ring
(17) on each side of the housing (2).
NOTE:
Be sure the chamfered side of the valve seat
faces the ball.
18. Install the inlet manifold (21) on the pump housing
with the bolts (14), a washer (16) on each end of the
bolt, and the nuts (15). Torque the bolts to 27 N.m (20
ft–lb).
19. Turn the pump over to the outlet side (top). Install an
o–ring (17), valve seat plate (18) with chamfer facing
the ball, ball (19, or 57 on Models 218–940
and
220–434), and another o–ring (17) on each side of
the housing (2). Install the outlet manifold (20) as in
step 18.
Repairing the Check Valves (See Fig. 6)
NOTE:
Check Valve Repair Kits are available. The kits
include four balls and eight o–rings, and are
available in buna–N/Delrin
r
, EPDM, and
r
(PTFE). Refer to the parts list for your pump.
1. Remove the bolts (14), washers (16) and nuts (15)
from the outlet manifold (20).
2. Tap the manifold with a plastic mallet to free it from
the pump. Remove all four o–rings (17), the valve
plate seats (18) and the balls (19, or 57 on Models
218–940 and 220–434).
3. Turn the pump over and remove the inlet manifold
(21), o–rings (17), seats (18) and balls (19).
4. Clean the manifolds and all mating parts thoroughly.
Check the o–rings, plates and balls for nicks or wear,
and replace as needed.
6. Install the inlet manifold on the pump housing with
the bolts (14), a washer (16) on each end of the bolt,
and the nuts (15). Torque the bolts to 27 N.m (20 ft–
lb).
7. Turn the pump over. Install an o–ring (17), valve seat
plate (18) with chamfer facing the ball, the ball (19, or
57 on Models 218–940 and 220–434), and another
o–ring (17) on each side of the housing (2). Install the
outlet manifold (20) as in step 6.
