Testing Electrical Machinery per DIN EN 60204 – Applica-
tions, Limit Values
The
PROFI
TEST 204
+
test instrument has been developed for test-
ing electrical machinery and controllers. After the standard was
revised in 2007, measurement of loop impedance is now required
as well. Measurement of loop impedance, as well as other mea-
surements stipulated for the testing of electrical machinery, can
also be performed with test instruments from the
PROFI

ASTER
series.
Comparison of Specified Tests with the Standards
Continuous Electrical Bonding of the Protective Conductor System
In this case, continuous electrical bonding of a protective
conductor system is tested by applying an alternating current
within a range of 0.20 and 10 A at a line frequency of 50 Hz
(= low-resistance measurement). Testing must be conducted
between the PE terminal and various points within the protective
conductor system.²
Loop Impedance Measurement
Loop impedance Z
L-PE
is measured and short-circuit current I
K
is
ascertained, in order to determine whether or not breaking
requirements for protective devices are being adhered to (see
section 8).
Insulation Resistance Measurement
All of the active conductors of the machine’s main circuit (L and N
or L1, L2, L3 and N) are short circuited and measured against PE
(protective conductor). Controllers or machine components which
are not laid out for this voltage (500 V DC) may be disconnected
from the measuring circuit during measurement. The measured
value must be at least 1 MOhm. The test can be subdivided into
individual steps.
Voltage Tests (with PROFITEST 204HP/HV only)
The electrical equipment of a machine must withstand a test
voltage applied between the conductors of all circuits and the
protective conductor system for a period of at least 1 second,
which is equal to twice the rated voltage of the equipment or
1000 V~, whichever is greater. The test voltage must have a
frequency of 50 Hz, and must be generated by a transformer with
a minimum power rating of 500 VA.
Voltage Measurements
EN 60204 stipulates that residual voltage at all exposed,
energized parts of a machine, at which more than 60 V are pres-
ent during operation, must drop to a value of 60 V or less within a
period of 5 seconds after supply voltage is switched off.
Function Test
The machine is operated with nominal voltage and is tested for
correct functioning, in particular for correct safety functions.
Special Tests
• Pulse control mode for troubleshooting (with PROFITEST 204HP/HV
only)
• Protective conductor test with 10 A test current (with
