22. INSPECT THE MAIN SPRINGS
Replace both springs if retraction failed inspection at step 4 or if the
springs show any signs of damage or rusting.
On 14 metre models it is recommended you remove the main spring
to gain access to the rope anchorage. Due to the size of the spring
in the 34 metre model, this is not necessary as the spring cover
screws are accessible with the main spring still fitted. Only remove the
spring to replace if worn or damaged.
To safely remove the main springs great care must be taken to
not allow the centre of the spring to fall free.
This will release the
stored energy within the spring and is extremely hazardous
.
Gently prise the spring from the drum using a thin pry bar placed
between the outside of the main spring and the inside wall of the
spring cover drum. Do not insert the pry bar to the base of the spring
as this will not give sufficient leverage.
Once it starts to lift, grip the body of the spring, and keep a firm grasp
so the coils cannot unravel.
Safely tie off the spring with a cable tie to prevent any accidental
release.
23. IF THE ROPE DOES NOT NEED TO BE
REPLACED THEN SKIP TO STEP 27
24. REMOVE THE SPRING COVER DRUM
Remove the 6 retaining screws and separate the cover drum from the
rope drum.
Replace the cover drum if there are any signs of damage or excessive
wear.
25. REMOVE ROPE RETAINING PIN
Line the pin hole up with the hole in the assembly pad and using a pin
punch tap the rope retaining pin out of the drum allowing the rope
anchorage to come free.
