Network Shared Printers
The QuickPanel View can connect to a PCL printer that is hosted by another
computer that supports the Ethernet SMB protocol, or directly to a printer
supporting the LPR/LPD protocol. Printer sharing in Microsoft Windows OS
supports the SMB protocol.
To connect to the printer, select Network from the Ports list of the Printers
configuration dialog, and then fill in a network path in the Net Path field.
Printers may support Server Message Block (SMB) or Line Printer Remote
(LPR) protocols. To determine which protocols your printer supports, refer to
the documentation provided with the printer.
For an
SMB compatible network printer,
use the UNC syntax:
\\server_name\printer_name.
Windows CE does not support use of the
server's IP for the server_name portion of the UNC.
Server_name
is the text name of the printer server. An IP address does not
work here.
Printer_name
is the printer port share name. Do not confuse the port share
name with the friendly printer name that may be displayed in a Windows
desktop printer configuration. To determine the share name, either ask your
IT department, or look it up from a Windows PC that can print to the printer
you wish to use. The share name will show on the sharing tab of the printer
properties dialog.
For an
LPR compatible network printer
, use the syntax:
LPR\printer_name
or
LPR\printer_ip_address
.
If connection to the shared printer requires domain credentials, and the
credentials have not yet been set, you will be prompted to fill in the credentials
when you next attempt to print. You have the choice of saving the credentials to
be used from then on, or to enter them every time.
Printer errors are not visible on the QuickPanel View.
