Long-duration work guidelines
Jobs that fall under this category include tank removals and pipe replacements. Generally, the
long-duration method is used after a short-term application, tank wash, and waste product
removal. For this type of work:
• Apply the TankSafe™ product until the tank is <10% of LEL (or the required % of LEL for cold
works) at the vent riser port.
• Verify <10% of LEL (or the required % of LEL for cold works) near the tank bottom after
shutdown.
• Use a meter with a pump, and lower a measuring tube into the tank. Do not allow the
measuring tube to come into contact with any liquid or the bottom of the tank.
• Position the meter tube approximately 31 cm (12") from the bottom of the tank.
• Conduct a tank wash and remove all waste product.
• Additional applications for persistence:
• Repeat the TankSafe™ application for 1 hour the following morning (or until <1% of LEL
is reached).
• Repeat the TankSafe™ application at the end of the day (or the second morning, if
needed) dependent on the time allocated for degassing.
• Repeat the tank measurement periodically during work according to your procedures.
NOTE
: These timings are guidelines only, the sequence may be shortened depending on the tank
size and configuration. Once you gain more experience in applying NanoVapor™ in your market
you will get to know the tbest sequence for the long-term application.
• Using a small diameter plastic tube installed through a suitable cap extend the tube so
that the end of the tube sits at the lower part of the tank and not in any liquid. This tube
should be weighted and secured off at the cap, the tube should extend far enough from the
excavation to enable an operator to safely connect a gas indicator to the end of the tube to
test the tank space. Monitor tank %LEL during work to ensure tank environment stays safe
(<10% of LEL or lower if required by your Work Standards)
• If >10% of LEL at any time, stop work.
• Assess the situation to determine if any sources outside the tank produced the vapor.
• Isolate identified sources from the tank and re-apply NanoVapor™ until <10% of LEL.
• Resume work after safe level is re-established.
• Upon opening the tank and exposing the interior, the LEL should be measured in
different locations of the tank. Should LEL be discovered simply place the outlet duct
of the NV-ST-1000 TankSafe™ Delivery Unit and reapply the TankSafe™ product until a
0% LEL reading is obtained. Once the tank top has been fully exposed the NV-ST-1000
TankSafe™ Delivery Unit may be reconfigured with a duct from the inlet of the
NV-ST-1000 TankSafe™ Delivery Unit that can be placed into the area inside the tank,
the outlet hose from the NV-ST-1000 TankSafe™ Delivery Unit should be raised to allow
dispersal of any fumes should they become present. Should workers wish to inspect the
condition of the tank/excavation. Care should be taken when entering the work area.
CAUTION
: All %LEL measurements MUST be taken by a competent person with a meter
properly calibrated for the fuel vapor being measured.
