6. MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENTS

6.1  Servicing Knife

6.1.1 Need for Knife Service

The Knife will periodically require servicing when the

Knife Blade

becomes dull. An indication of a

possibly dulling blade may be frequent

messages or ragged cuts on the film edge.

These symptoms should not be confused with problems related to the Knife returning after a completed cut
which can be caused by misalignments.

6.1.2 Operator Knife Service Procedure

Servicing the knife by the operator consists of changing the cutting edge of the knife blade or replacing the
knife blade. The following step-by-step procedure describes the process:

DANGER:

The knife blade is extremely sharp! Exercise due caution in accessing

and handling the knife blade.

1.

Select

from the

. This will move the knife carrier assembly

to the far right of the top cover.

2.

Turn the imagesetter

OFF

using the power switch on the back of the unit.

3.

Open the top cover and view the

Knife Blade Carrier Assembly

on the inside of the top cover, next to

the motor.

DANGER!

The

 Knife Blade

is now exposed and readily accessible to severe injury.

Please be extremely careful when working around this assembly.

4.

Unscrew the

knurled

 Thumb Nut

 located in

the center of the carrier. Remove the

Nut

,

Blade Guard

, and

Knife Blade

. Note the

order and orientation of the

Blade Guard

 and

Knife Blade

 for later replacement. Use a

marker pen or a grease pencil to mark the
recently dulled edge corner of the blade for
later reference.

5.

Observe that by flipping the blade various
ways that four different edges of the blade
can be exposed for cutting. Select a new edge
of the existing blade or if all four edges have
been used, replace the blade with a new one.

6.

Orient the new or reoriented

Knife Blade

onto the pins on the

Blade Carrier

 (in the

cover) and hold it in place with a finger (Be
careful not to cut yourself!).

7.

Install the

Blade Guard

onto the same pins on the

Blade Carrier

 (on top of the

Knife Blade

),

orienting it such that the flexible finger of the guard is along the bottom edge of the cover, facing
towards the left of the machine. Hold the

Blade Guard

 and

Knife Blade

 in place with a finger.
