6. The edge of each stripe on the film will be annotated with information about the operating condition of
the imagesetter (the same information produced when the
or
option is selected).
One item in this header is the
DEN:
or density setting for that stripe.
7. Set the
in the
to the new
setting printed in the tone stripe header.
8. As a check, the
test may be run again, and the third pair of stripes from the right should
give the optimum results.
9. If the desired Dmax was not within the range of the test, change the
in increments of 40%
more or less of the last
setting (e.g. if the previous setting was 120% and the darkest stripe
on the test was still too light, then readjust the
to 120% + 120% x 40% = 120% x 1.4 =
168%; if too dark, 120% x .6 = 72%) OR set the
to the
DEN:
value of the Right most strip
or Left most stripe (depending which direction is closer to what you are looking for) and rerun the test.
5.5 Film Supply Tracking
The imagesetter engine has the capability of keeping track of the film supply independent of any front end
media tracking systems. The imagesetter will keep count of film left, film used and can give a
warning at a user programmable level. The imagesetter film supply tracking system is
programmed and monitored from the imagesetter control panel. Some front end systems also incorporate
fairly sophisticated media tracking systems that can monitor film usage of several cassettes of partially used
media at the same time.
NOTE:
If these front end systems do not access the imagesetter internal film counter,
the results from the front end counter may not be accurate. This can result
because the front end media monitor will not count film feeds initiated by the
Operator from the imagesetter front panel. See documentation supplied with
RIP
for more information.
Both the imagesetter based and front end based systems work on a 'bookkeeping' basis of being told how
much film is initially in the supply cassette and counting how much film is used. There is no mechanism
for the imagesetter to measure the actual amount of film available. Either system requires some diligence
by the operator in accurately informing the media tracking system of the initial amount of film contained in
the cassette and resetting the counters when appropriate.
