Lighting Your Fireplace
PREPARATION
I Switch off any exhaust fans in
the house when starting the fire.
I Pull out air regulator fully.
I Stack softwood kindling on top
of two pieces of hardwood.
I Make sure air can move freely
from the grate around the stack.
I Place a firelighter (circled) near
the top of the stack, and light it
I Do not use cardboard or paper.
START UP PHASE
I Leave the air regulator fully
open to allow maximum air.
I After roughly 20min, or once
the fire is fully ignited (shown to
the right) the air regulator can be
closed to 50%.
This will stop the primary air
(from the bottom grate), causing
secondary air to enter from the top
of the hotbox and allow the heater
to built a good bed of coals.
Bright and hot means efficient
and clean, smoldering and cold
means inefficient and dirty
I The start up cycle is complete
when there are no longer any
visible flames.
I Open the door slowly and
spread the remaining coals.
