Checklist and preparations before washing clothes
Read this section carefully to avoid problems with the washing machine or damage to
clothes.
• When you wash clothes for the first time the colours may run. Dip a white towel in
detergent and rub it lightly on the inside of a garment or some other hidden part of the
garment to test whether the colour transfers to the towel.
• Wash clothes that discolour easily (such as shawls) separately for the first few was-
hes.
• Pre-wash stains on cuffs, collars or pockets carefully using a brush and liquid deter-
gent. Then wash them in the washing machine.
• Check the care labels on garments before you wash them (follow instructions re-
garding temperature and washing method). Garments that are washed at the wrong
temperature or using the wrong method may discolour or be damaged.
Remember!
Do not leave wet clothes lying in the washing machine for a long time waiting to be was-
hed.
Garments that are unsuitable for ma-
chine washing
• Some garments may lose their shape if they are so-
aked in water: ties, waistcoats, some outerwear etc.
can shrink considerably if they are soaked in water.
• Items such as ruched, starched or embroidered gar-
ments can lose their shape when they are soaked in water.
• Some garments made from cotton or wool can easily lose their shape.
• Decorative clothing and folk dress are examples of items that easily become disco-
loured.
• Do not machine wash garments that do not have a material label or care label.
• Do not machine wash garments that are stained with solvents such as petrol, naphtha,
benzene, thinners or alcohol.
