34 DIESEL ENGINE
LONG-TERM ENGINE STORAGE
1. Drain the engine oil and replace with clean oil. Run the
engine for 5 minutes.
2. Open the drain cocks and remove the radiator cap to drain
all of the coolant from the engine and radiator. Leave the
drain cocks open. Label the engine with a reminder that
there is no coolant in the engine.
3. Repair any leaks. Ensure that all bolts and screws are
tight.
4. Remove the battery and store (see page 32).
5. Run the engine every 2 to 3 months with no load for 5
minutes.
6. If the engine is not run for a period of more than 5 months,
apply engine oil liberally to valve guides and valve stem
seals before starting.

BELT TENSION ADJUSTMENT

2. Move the alternator to adjust belt tension.
3. Retighten the bolts after adjustment.
4. The correct tension can be determined by applying a 22 lb.

should be .28 to .35 inches.
5. Inspect the belt regularly for cracks, tears or brittleness.
