Introduction
This chapter gives a physical and functional overview of the DSS-24. The DSS-
24 is an unmanaged switch, designed for use on small and medium sized networks
that require the ability to switch between 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps. The DSS-24
can be used in conjunction with other switches and hubs.
The chapter is divided into several sections. Each section describes the features of
the DSS-24. Many of the topics covered will be dealt with in more detail later in
the manual.

The DSS-24 has the following features:
•
24 NWAY 10/100-TX Fast Ethernet Ports.
•
All ports support both Full Duplex and Half Duplex operation and
are configurable with polarity detection and correcting.
•
Wire speed packet filtering and forwarding.
•
Per port LED to indicate link, activity, speed and operation modes.
•
Configuration data held in EEPROM, controlled by an embedded
micro-controller.
•
Integrated address management, including Layer-2 address
resolution, self learning
•
Supports up to 8K unicast addresses.
•
Low-power design operating at 3.3V.
•
RS-232 console port allows user to configure switch ports.
•
All ports support store and forward.
•
Packet forwarding rate at 148,810 packets per second in 100 Mbps
