6. Transportation
This chapter covers the necessary requirements for transporting
the gauge to job sites and from one facility to another.
General Awareness
The transportation of hazardous materials is regulated by the
U.S. Department of Transportation. This includes the
transportation of the radioactive material as contained in
portable moisture/density gauges in private vehicles on public
highways. The regulations are published in the Code of Federal
Regulations, 49CFR100-177. Copies of this publication are
available from the US Government Printing Office. They are
updated in October.
Note: The regulations define any employee that is involved with
the transportation of hazardous materials, as a HAZMAT
employee, and requires that they receive appropriate training
by the HAZMAT employer. This training must take place within
90 days of hire or transfer, and must be current within three
years. The employer is responsible to maintain records of
training and testing.
