Safety Instructions
The warranty will be void in the event of damage caused by failure to observe
these safety instructions! We do not assume any liability for any consequen-
tial damage!
Nor do we assume any liability for material and personal damage caused by
improper use or non-compliance with the safety instructions! In such cases,
the warranty will be null and void.
• The unauthorised conversion and/or modi
fi
cation of the product is not permitted for
safety and approval reasons (CE). Never dismantle the product.
• The product is only intended for use in dry, indoor locations. No part of the product
should be allowed to become damp or wet; never take hold of it if your hands are
wet!
Use of the power adapter involves the risk of a potentially fatal electric shock!
• The product must not be exposed to extremes of temperature, direct sunlight,
vibrations or moisture.
• The product is not a toy. Keep devices that operate on the mains voltage out of the
reach of children. Therefore, be especially careful when children are around.
Use the product where it is out of the reach of children.
• Do not pull the wall plug transformer from the mains socket by pulling on the cable.
• When setting up the product, make sure that the cables are not kinked, squashed
or damaged by sharp edges.
• If the wall plug transformer is damaged, do not touch it; there is danger to life from
electric shock!
First, switch off the mains voltage to the socket to which the wall plug transformer
is connected (switch off at the corresponding circuit breaker or, for example, re-
move the safety fuse, switch off the corresponding FI protective switch, so that the
socket is fully disconnected).
Only then pull the damaged wall plug transformer out of the mains socket and
dispose of it in an environmentally responsible manner. Replace it with a new wall
plug transformer with the same speci
fi
cations.
• The design of the wall plug transformer complies with protection class II. Only use
a standard power socket as the voltage source (see section “Technical Data”).
• Do not leave packing materials unattended. They may become dangerous
playthings for children.
• Handle the product with care, it can be damaged by impacts, blows, or accidental
drops, even from a low height.
Connection and Getting Started
• Before connecting or disconnecting a SATA drive to/from the hard disc adapter, it must be
separated from all cables. Remove the USB cable from the hard disc adapter; then, separate
the adapter from the wall plug transformer!
• Place the hard disc adapter onto the SATA drive (hard disc or optical drive).
• Place the drive with the hard disc adapter connected to it onto a non-metallic, smooth,
horizontal, stable surface.
For valuable furniture, a suitable underlay is necessary in order to avoid scratch marks.
• Connect the round socket at the hard disc adapter with the wall plug transformer.
• Plug the wall plug transformer into a mains socket.
• Connect the USB socket via the USB cable enclosed to a USB port of your computer (use a
USB3.0 socket where possible).
Caution:
Once the hard disc has been connected to the power supply, it must not be moved
again (moved to another position, wiggled, etc.).
The writing/reading head of the hard disc could touch the surface of the magnetic
disc; this would not only damage the hard drive but also any saved data on the hard
disc.
The warranty will be void!
• Windows recognises the new hardware and installs the driver integrated in Windows.
• If the hard drive is already partitioned and data is present, it should appear in the Windows
fi
le manager after a few seconds.
If the hard drive is new, it is necessary to partition and format it; see next section.
Partitioning / Formatting the Hard Drive
Firstly, a new hard drive has to be partitioned and subsequently formatted before any data can
be saved on it.
In Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7, partitioning and formatting are very easy to
perform from the Control Panel. This is where you select the correct hard drive and create a
new partition. Then format this.
☞
Make absolutely sure that you format the new hard disc and not an existing hard disc
or partition, data loss!).
Formatting the hard drive (or deleting a partition and creating a new partition and
formatting that) deletes all saved data on the hard drive! You should perform a data
backup
fi
rst!
Handling
Never move a hard drive when in operation. Do not hit it, do not tilt it, never move
it from one location to another.
After disconnecting the wall plug transformer and the USB socket, wait for at
least for 20 seconds before you move the hard drive, otherwise it can be damaged!
After switching off the hard drive, the write/read head will be brought into a parking
position, the drive motor will be switched off and the internal rotating magnetic
discs inside the hard drive slow down.
Shock sensors in the hard drive record excessive stress; loss of warranty!
• Transport the hard disk in a suitable padded transport bag.
• When setting up the product, make sure that the cables are neither kinked nor
pinched.
• Avoid the following adverse conditions at the installation location and during trans-
portation:
- Excessive humidity or damp
- Extreme cold or heat, direct sunlight
- Dust or
fl
ammable gases, fumes or solvents
- Strong vibrations, impacts or blows
-
Strong
magnetic
fi
elds, such as those found in the vicinity of machinery or loud-
speakers
• Never use the product immediately after it has been taken from a cold room to a
warm one. The condensation that forms might destroy your unit. In addition, there
is a risk of a fatal electric shock.
Allow the product to reach room temperature, before connecting it to the power
supply and putting it in to use. This may take several hours.
