Chilicon Microinverters on 40A Maximum Backfeed
Date: 10/7/2019
Chilicon Power trunk cable allows for branch circuits of up to 24A on a 30A
breaker. However, as a standard 200A service panel with a 200A main can
support a total of 40A of PV system backfeed, it is sometimes desirable to use
circuit breakers smaller than 30A. There are two common scenarios,
depending on the type of PV module deployed: lower wattage modules and
ones greater than 350W.
For higher wattage modules, up to 10 modules (5 micros) can be connected on
a branch circuit fed into a 20A breaker. Two of these can be installed either in
a subpanel or, if room permits, at the main service panel. This can be
increased to 12 modules if the power of the microinverters is limited to 640W*
For lower wattage PV modules, the maximum number of modules can be
deployed by using a combination of a 25A and 15A breaker. A total of 16
modules (8 micros) can be connected on the 25A breaker circuit and a total of
10 modules (5 micros) on the 15A breaker. In this scenario, the power of the
microinverters should be limited to 576W*.
