It is recom m ended that new en gin es should
have the fir s t o il change at 3,000 m ile s , th ereafter
at 3 m onths or 4,000 m ile in te r v a ls. T his drain
in terval may be in c r e a se d or d e c rea sed depending
upon the se v e r ity of s e r v ic e and exp erien ce with
s p e c ific o ils or the recom m en dations and u sed o il

a n a ly sis a s furnished by the su p p lier. Such a p r o
cedure would be helpful in esta b lish in g the m ost
p r a c tic a l o il change p eriod for the p a rticu lar

Contam inated engine o il can ca u se a m alfunc
tion of valve lifte r s or the PCV v a lv e. A stick in g
v a lv e lifte r can cau se leakage of unburned g a s e s
through the valve. A plugged or stick in g PCV valve
w ill affect carburetor m ixture and w ill prevent
p rop er cran k case ventilation.

RECOMMENDATIONS

sp e c ific a tio n num bers.
The se le c tio n of a r elia b le su p p lier, w ith c lo s e
attention to h is o il and filte r elem en t change r e c
om m endations can provide sa tisfa c to r y lu b rication
and lon ger life for engine.
G asolin e and D ie s e l Engines
U se only high quality o ils which a re intended
for S e r v ic e D esign ation s "MS” and "DM” (SE/CC
New A .P .I. D esignation) s e e NOTE.
The follow ing additive lim ita tio n s, w hich r e
quire em p h asis, have been p laced on the r e c o m
mended M IL -L -2104B (now su p ersed ed by M IL -L -
46152) and Supplement 1 oils:
1. Sufficient zinc dithiophosphate to produce
a m inim um of 0.07 and a m axim um of 0.10 per
cent by w eight.
2. Sulfated ash (ASTM D -874) of 1.00 p er cent
m axim um by w eight, except lu b rican ts that contain
only barium d e te rg en t-d isp ersa n ts w here 1.50 per
cent by w eight is allow ed.
NOTE: Supplement 1 engine o ils (based upon
now o b so leted M IL-L-2104A ) have been su p ersed ed
by M IL -L -2104B engine o ils . H ow ever, Supplem ent
1 engine o ils MS-DM (SE/CC New A .P .I. D e s ig
nation), with a h istory of sa tisfa c to r y p erform an ce
a r e av a ila b le, and may be u sed .
The u se of proper engine o ils and o il change
in te r v a ls a re your b e st a ssu r a n c e of continued r e
lia b ility and p erform an ce from your engine.
IMPORTANT: N on-detergent and oth er low er
quality engine o ils a re sp e c ific a lly not r e c o m
mended.
