A ll inform ation pertaining to "POWER STEERING” (SEC. 9B) in
S e r v ic e Manual S T -331-71 is applicable to m od els co v ered by th is
supplem ent. The follow ing inform ation and illu stra tio n a lso apply.
M A IN TEN A N C E
NOTE: If for any reason the power steerin g
sy s te m should fa il, the control valve "locks up"
and the ste e r in g gear o p erates manually, giving
the d river full control of the v eh icle. R esponse of
the ste er in g gear in effort applied to the steering
w heel w ill be in crea sed .
Should the pow er ste er in g sy stem becom es
inoperative due to the lo s s of power steerin g fluid,
one of the follow ing step s should be taken before
the truck is moved under its own power or before
running engine:
1.
Make a ll n e c e ssa r y r e p a irs, fill and bleed
ste e r in g sy ste m .
CAUTIO N: When pump drive belt is
also used to drive the fan or other engine
components it should not be disconnected.
The pump becomes an idler pulley and if
allowed to run dry would burn up bearing
causing fan to stop and possibly damage
engine further. Do not operate pumpwith-
out steering fluid in pump reservoir.
2. Rem ove pump drive belt, if pump is driven
by a sep arate belt from the crankshaft. T his w ill
prevent further p o ssib le damage to the pump w hile
driving with manual steerin g .
3. If failed component is not at pump, r e
route pump p r e ssu r e line d irectly back into pump
r e s e r v o ir .
If at the tim e of final repair it has been de
term in ed the pump has failed or was damaged to
the point of replacem ent, the en tire steerin g s y ste m
should be cleaned and flushed out.
Due to sco rin g of the pump at tim e of fa ilu re,
the control valve, and cylinder should be d is a s
sem b led and any p a r tic le s of m etal wiped clean
from a ll p a rts. L in es and h o ses should be rem oved
and blown c le a r . Tag a ll lin e s and h o ses for proper
relo ca tio n .

lin e filte r is now available for s e r v ic e u se .
U se of th is filte r on v e h ic le s which operate
under conditions w here con sid erab le dust is p r e s
ent should extend power steerin g life con sid erab ly.
