WARNING!
If the hood is not fully latched it could
fly up when the vehicle is moving and
block your forward vision. You could
have a collision. Be sure all hood
latches are fully latched before driv-
ing.
Automatic Transaxle (If
Equipped)
4-Speed Automatic Transaxle
The electronically controlled transaxle
provides precise shifting. The trans-
axle electronics are self-calibrating,
therefore, the first few shifts on a new
vehicle may be somewhat abrupt. This
is a normal condition, and precision
shifts will develop within a few hun-
dred miles.
Shifting from DRIVE to PARK or RE-
VERSE should be done only after the
accelerator pedal is released and the
vehicle is stopped. Be sure to keep
your foot on the brake when moving
the shift lever between these gears.
Gear Ranges
PARK (P)
PARK supplements the parking brake
by locking the transaxle. The engine
can be started in this range. Never at-
tempt to use PARK while vehicle is in
motion.
Apply parking brake when leaving ve-
hicle in this range. When parking on a
flat surface, place the shift lever in the
PARK position first, and then apply
the parking brake. When parking on a
hill, set the parking brake before plac-
ing the shift lever in PARK. Otherwise,
it is difficult to move the shift lever out
of PARK because of the load on the
transaxle locking mechanism.
REVERSE (R)
This range is used for moving the ve-
hicle backward. Shift into this range
only after the vehicle has been
stopped completely.
NEUTRAL (N)
The engine may be started in this
range.
WARNING!
Do not coast in NEUTRAL and never
turn off the ignition to coast down a
hill. These practices are very danger-
ous and may result in a loss of control
of the vehicle or an accident.
