INSTALLING NETWORK SOFTWARE
3.3
USING NETWORK MANAGEMENT
Management software is provided with all network adapters for
the Macintosh. The management for the Macintosh is an Init/cdev
file that is installed into your System Folder by the Customize
feature of the software installer program. Management is
automatically installed when the system is started. However, you
can turn management off if you want to.
You should have installed Network Management during the
installation procedures for FDDITalk. If it is not installed, refer to
the Customize Installation procedures in Section 3.2.1.
Management can be used by any workstation running an SNMP-
compliant network management package. A network management
program reads the information in the management configuration
window. Before using network management with your adapter,
the software must be configured by entering information in certain
fields in the management configuration window.
To configure the network management, open the Control Panel
from your Desk Accessories. Select the FDDI SNMP Management
icon in the Control Panel.
The management configuration window contains the following
fields. Enter the appropriate information in the designated fields.
Note that some fields are not user-accessible.
•
CName
- This is a user-configurable field of up to 32
characters. The default is public, and is listed to
authenticate the SNMP request from the Macintosh.
•
Location
- Enter the location, up to 32 characters, of the
Macintosh.
NOTE:
Your Macintosh must have System File Version 6.0.4 or later
and AppleTalk must be installed to be able to run the Network
Management software.
