5 Maintenance
6 Maintenance
All instructions intended to keep the Melting Point Unit in a
fully operative condition should be duly noted. This also includes
a periodic cleaning and checking for any damages. It is also
recommended to calibrate the unit periodically with adequate
calibration substances.
6.1
Cleaning
The housing of the Melting Point Unit B-540 is coated with
paint. It must only be cleaned with a rag to be either dry or
moistened with alcohol. Do not use any chlorinated solvents,
acetone or similar chemical to clean the magnifying glass.
6.2
Upkeep
The upkeep of the unit is mainly limited to:
• a periodical calibration of the transmission
6.3
Calibration of the unit with calibrating
substances
The unit is to be checked frequently by means of reference
substances. We recommend to use the following reference
substances for calibrating the Melting Point Unit B-540:
Vanilline
Rated melting point
approx. 83°C
Phenacetine
Rated melting point
approx. 136°C
Caffeine
Rated melting point
approx. 237°C
We recommend to use the reference substances from the
calibration kit, Büchi order number 37454.
