Setting Up Network Communications
The MTS 6520 VCI is capable of communicating on your
workshop network over USB, Wireless and Ethernet.
The Network Setup tab in the VCI Manager software
provides a number of functions used to select and con-
figure the VCI network connection interfaces including
wireless access and security settings.
You must be connected to the VCI via USB to access the
settings on the Network Setup tab. If you are not con-
nected via USB, the controls on the Network Setup tab
are disabled.
5.3.1
Enabling Wired Ethernet - LAN with Network
Router (Straight Ethernet Cable)
Before modifying the VCI communications interface,
contact your IT Administrator. You need to know if your
LAN automatically assigns IP addresses. If not, you need
to obtain an IP Address and Subnet Mask to assign to
your VCI.
Many offices and workshops have computers connected
together using Ethernet cables, network routers, and
other items such as printers and modems (e.g., internet
connection for email). The Illustration below shows
one computer connected to a network router which
is then connected to two VCIs. In an actual network
there will typically be several computers connected to
network routers allowing any of the computers to and
control one of the VCIs.
Use the following procedure to configure your VCI for
wired Ethernet communication in your LAN environ-
ment.
1.
Start the VCI Manager software by clicking the VCI
Manager icon on your desktop.
2.
Plug the USB cable into the PC and VCI.
3.
Power on the VCI by plugging in the AC/DC 12-volt
power adapter.
4.
Select your VCI and click the Connect button in the
VCI Manager software VCI Explorer tab.
5.
Select the Network Setup tab.
6.
Select the Wired Ethernet tab.
7.
Select the Enable Wired Ethernet Interface check
box in the Interface Control box to enable the inter-
face. Once you enable the interface, the IP Address
Configuration box and the Apply and Cancel buttons
become active. [The VCI Manager software stores
the changes you have made for each interface. You
can select the other interface, make additional
changes, and then apply all the changes to both
interfaces at once by selecting the Apply button. You
can start over any time before you select Apply by
selecting Cancel so that all your stored changes are
discarded.]
8.
Select Obtain an IP address automatically if your
LAN automatically assigns IP addresses. Otherwise,
enter the assigned IP Address and Subnet mask
given to you by your IT Administrator.
9.
Select Apply to reconfigure your VCI. A screen
displays the changes to be configured. Select Yes to
continue, or No to get back to the Network Setup
tab to make any changes.
10.
Record or print your settings as they are displayed
on the Properties tab for future reference.
