Automatic transmission with Steptronic*
You can either drive the car as with a
conventional automatic transmission, or
shift between gears manually.
If you move the selector lever to the left,
from position D into the M/S shift plane,
this activates the sport-oriented pro-
grams in the automatic gearbox. As
soon as you move the lever in the "+" or
"–" direction, the Steptronic transmis-
sion's manual gear shift mode is acti-
vated. If you wish to return to fully auto-
matic gear shifts, move the lever back
to the right, to position D.

P R N D M/S + –
Moving the selector lever
A catch prevents selector lever posi-
tions R and P from being selected inad-
vertently, and is released by pressing
the button on the front of the selector
lever knob, see arrow.
Before moving the selector lever
away from P or N with the car at a
standstill, you must press the brake
pedal down to release the lever – shift-
lock.
Keep the foot brake applied until you
are ready to move off; this will prevent
the car from creeping forwards when a
gear is selected.

Before leaving the car with the
engine running, move the selector
lever to P or N and apply the hand-
brake, to avoid any risk of the car
beginning to move.
Do not leave the car unattended with
the engine running, as this constitutes a
potentially severe accident risk.

P Park
Engage this gear only when the car is
standing still. The driven wheels are
locked.
R Reverse
Engage this gear only when the car is
standing still.
N Neutral
Select only if the journey is interrupted
for a fairly long time.
D Drive – automatic shift position
Use this position for all normal driving.
The system shifts up through all forward
gears.
