Brake fluid
Telltale light
The brake warning light comes
on even though the handbrake
has been released:
The brake fluid level is too low, see
page 18.
Topping up brake fluid
Ask BMW Service to restore the correct
brake fluid level or to trace and rectify
the cause of any brake fluid loss; BMW
Service is aware of and will use the
brake fluid grades – DOT 4 – recom-
mended by the manufacturer.
Loss of brake fluid may be evident as
increased brake pedal travel. Comply
with the instructions on page 115.
Brake fluid is hygroscopic, that is
to say it absorbs moisture gradu-
ally from the air.
To ensure that the car's brake system
remains in good working order, have
the brake fluid renewed every two years
by BMW Service; see also page 72 and
the Service Booklet.
Brake fluid is hazardous to health, and
also attacks the car's paintwork. Store it
in sealed original packs, inaccessible to
children.
Do not spill brake fluid; add it only up to
the MAX mark on the reservoir. If it
comes into contact with hot parts of the
engine, brake fluid may ignite and
cause burns.

When disposing of old brake fluid,
comply with the relevant environ-
mental protection laws.
