Rear side of the devices:
Typical error traces, velocities of propagation and cable impedances are
displayed on the rear side of the devices.
Accuracy
The TDR 500/TDR 510 measures cable lengths and the distances to faults with an accuracy of ±1%.
The measurement accuracy mainly depends on the correct velocity of propagation (Vp) and its homo-
geneity over the cable lengths. If the Vp has been adjusted incorrectly, or if the value changes along
the length of the cable, additional faults will occur and the measurement accuracy will deteriorate.
In unscreened, multi-core cables (including power cables), the Vp is less clear and in the case of cables
wound tightly on a drum, Vp is lower than when the cables were laid.
4 Commissioning and settings
4.1 Checks to perform before commissioning
1. Check the device and connection cable for damage.
2. Check the separation filter and its connection cable with the crocodile clips (optional) for damage.
3. Only operate the device and connection cable when they are in a technically faultless condition.
4.2 Adjusting settings
Adjust the following settings before performing any measurements:
• Velocity of propagation (v/2) - Refer to the typical values on the rear side of the device.
The velocity of propagation can be set as a factor of the speed of light Vc (in %) or as a speed (in
m/µs or ft/µs) . The calculation is based on the value Vp = % VC (accuracy ±1 digit)
• Cable impedance (Z) – Refer to the typical values on the rear side of the device
• Measuring unit for distance indicator and v/2 (metres or feet)
• Contrast
• Automatic switch off (1 min, 2 min, 3 min and disabled)
The device has an adjustable switch-off function in order to save the battery life. The automatic
switch off remains disabled while the menu is open.
• Time and date (TDR 510 only):
1. Switch on the device with the key.
The start screen displays the following information: model, software version of the device, battery
charge status. The TDR 510 also displays the date and time.
2. To open the main menu, press the key.
3. Use the keys to navigate to the menu and press the SELECT key.
