All BAUR devices and systems are manufactured according to state-of-the-art technology and are safe
to operate. Operational safety and reliability in practice can be achieved only when all necessary mea-
sures have been taken. The owner and user of the device are responsible for planning these measures
and monitoring their implementation.
2.1 Instructions to the user
The product may be operated only by authorised and trained electrical engineers. The user must have:
• Knowledge of the technical equipment and operation of the TDR 500/TDR 510,
• Knowledge of the testing and measurement procedures,
• Knowledge of plant engineering (cable types, switchgear, etc.).
2.2 Intended use
The BAUR TDR 500/TDR 510 time domain reflectometer is used for fault location in all metal cables
such as power cables, coaxial cables, data cables and communication cables. The TDR 500/TDR 510
must only be used on deenergised, currentless electric circuits.
Measurement on live low-voltage cables up to 600 V are possible in combination with the BAUR CAT
IV separation filter (optional).
The device complies with the electromagnetic immunity requirements of EN 13849-1.
If the device is used without observing this condition, safe operation cannot be guaranteed. The ope-
rator or user is liable for any damage to persons and property resulting from incorrect operation.
2.3 Avoiding dangers and taking safety precautions

When setting up the test system and operating the TDR 500/TDR 510, you must comply with the
following regulations and guidelines:
• Accident prevention and environmental protection regulations applicable for your country
• Safety instructions and regulations of the country in which the TDR 500/TDR 510 is being used
(according to the latest version)
• EU/EFTA countries: EN 50110 “Operation of electrical installations”; other countries: The stan-
dards for operating electric systems applicable in your country
• Local safety and accident prevention regulations
Technically secure state of the device
Safety, function and availability depend on the proper condition of the device. Upgrades, modifica-
tions or alterations to the product are essentially prohibited.

Operate the device only in a technically perfect condition.

In case of damage and malfunction, immediately stop the device, mark it accordingly and have the
faults rectified by appropriately qualified and authorised personnel.

Comply with the inspection and maintenance conditions.
