Flying with the EXP5000

Heading Capture/Hold Mode ( HDG Mode ) - The PFD supports
the HDG mode as follows:

To set the heading, on the EXP5000, press the Hdg Bug
button and rotate the right knob. The Heading Bug is
magenta.

Engage the heading mode on the autopilot.
The autopilot flies the input heading. You can select a new
heading at any time while the autopilot is in HDG mode and the
autopilot will fly the new heading.

NAV (Navigation) Mode - The autopilot flies a course or plan
specified by the Nav source. Program the Nav source (GPS or
Nav radio), select the Nav source on the EXP5000, and then
engage NAV mode on the autopilot. The autopilot intercepts and
flies the active leg. The Nav sources can be:

Nav = GPS1 or GPS2 (GPS flight plan)
■
Nav = VLOC1 or VLOC2
Refer to your autopilot documentation for further autopilot
features.

GPSS (GPS Roll Steering) Mode - If this feature is available and
engaged on the autopilot, the autopilot flies the active flight plan
of the selected GPS (NAV = GPS1 or GPS2). When you engage
GPSS mode on the autopilot, the autopilot flies the GPS steering
commands from the selected GPS. Avidyne recommends that
you use GPSS mode as the Nav Mode during autopilot
operations to provide a higher level of accuracy.
Note: In NAV mode, the Heading Bug is hollow (not coupled with the
AP), remains at its last set value, and may not be aligned with the
course being flown.

Do not use GPSS mode on the final approach segment of a
VLOC approach (ILS, LOC or non-GPS-overlay VOR). You
must select NAV mode (and clear GPSS mode) prior to the
turn onto the final approach course.
