ASCO Model 950 Surge Protective Device (SPD) and Fuse Box
Precautions
Precautions
HAZARD OF ELECTRIC SHOCK, EXPLOSION, OR ARC FLASH
• Apply appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow safe
electrical work practices. See NFPA 70E, NOM-029-STPS or CSA Z462.
•
This equipment must only be installed and serviced by qualified electri
-
cal personnel.
•
Turn off all power supplying this equipment before working on or inside
equipment.
•
Always use a properly rated voltage sensing device to confirm power is off.
• Replace all devices, doors and covers before turning on power to this
equipment.
•
This equipment must be effectively grounded per all applicable codes.
Use an equipment-grounding conductor to connect this equipment to the
power system ground.
•
Confirm that the Surge Protective Device voltage rating on the module
or nameplate label is not less than the operating voltage.
Failure to follow these instructions will result in death or serious injury.
HAZARD OF ELECTRIC SHOCK, EXPLOSION, OR ARC FLASH
• This Surge Protective Device (SPD) + Three Phase Fuse Box is for use
by those who understand and accept its benefits and risks.
• The loss of SPD protection is a symptom of system level overvoltage
problems. Ungrounded distribution systems are designed to ‘float’ and
‘move’ with respect to ground. An SPD that has lost protection may
escalate the initial distribution system anomaly, resulting in equipment
shutdown, single-phasing, loss of production, etc.
• In the event of sustained overvoltages caused by electrical distribution
system anomalies, the SPD component will fail short-circuited and draw
follow-on available electrical fault current. This will result in the clearing
of the dedicated upstream overcurrent protection (OCP) provided by the
Fuse Box.
• The two components of the 950 are to be installed together as one unit.
• The Fuse Box component is REQUIRED to be installed on the lineside
of, and in-line with, the medium voltage SPD component as dedicated
OCP and to disconnect the SPD from the electrical system in the event
of SPD failure.
• The entire 950 is to be installed in parallel with the electrical system.
• ASCO recommends that the Model 950 not be installed unless this infor-
mation is understood and acceptable to the end-user.
Failure to follow these instructions will result in death or serious injury.
