STARTING
This vehicle is extremely fast and
powerful, and must be used with the
greatest care. Do not ride this vehicle if
you are not an experienced, trained mo-
torcycle rider. This vehicle is capable of
extremely high speeds and extremely
high performance and must be used
with due respect for these capabilities.
Do not place anything inside the front
part of the fairing between the handle-
bar and the dashboard. Any object pla-
ced in this area could jam the forks, and
also could restrict visibility of the
dashboard.
NOTE
Before starting the engine, care-
fully read the “safe drive” chapter, see p.
17 (SAFE DRIVE).
Exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide,
which is extremely poisonous if inhaled.
Avoid starting the engine in closed or bad-
ly-ventilated rooms.
Failure to observe this warning may cause
loss of consciousness or even lead to
death by asphyxia.
NOTE
When the side stand is extended
the engine will not start unless the transmis-
sion is in neutral. Note also that if you attempt
to shift into gear with extended side stand, the
engine will stop.
With the side stand retracted, the engine may
be started with the gear selector in neutral
without pulling in the clutch lever. The engine
may be started while the transmission is in ge-
ar only if the clutch lever is pulled in.
Be careful not to drop the vehicle when
you first sit on it.
◆
Sit astride the vehicle, see p. 70 (GET-
TING ON AND OFF THE VEHICLE).
Ensure that the side stand is correctly
stowed.
◆
Ensure that the dimmer switch (1) is in the
(push DOWN) low beam “
'
” position.
◆
Ensure that the engine stop switch (2) is
in the “
G
&
” (ON) position.
◆
Turn the ignition key (A) to the “
&
” (ON)
position.
At this point:
– the red engine oil pressure warning li-
ght LED “
+
” (3) comes on on the
dashboard and remains on until the
engine starts, see p. 38 (Engine oil
pressure warning light LED
+
).
– the red line warning light LED “
max
”
(4) comes on on the dashboard for ap-
proximately three seconds and the ta-
chometer pointer (5) shifts to the pre-
set red line threshold;
– the instantaneous speed (6), the trip
odometer (7) and the total miles/kilo-
meters odometer (8) appear on the left
display (multifunction);
– the coolant temperature (9) and the di-
gital clock (10) appear on the right di-
splay (multifunction).
NOTE
When the engine is cold, the
word “
.
” (9a) is displayed.
Whenever the ignition key (A) is tur-
ned to “
&
“ (ON) position, the symbol
“
EFI
” (9b) is displayed for about three
seconds.
