Chapter 5 SNMP Setting
5.1 SNMP Introduction
Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a
popular protocol for network management. It is widely
used in local area networks (LAN)
for collecting
information, and managing and monitoring, network
devices, such as servers, printers, hubs, switches, and
routers from a management host.
Managed devices
that support SNMP including software are referred to
as an SNMP agent, which usually interacts with third-
party SNMP management software to enable the
sharing of network status information between
monitored devices and applications and the SNMP
management system. A defined collection of variables
(managed objects) are maintained by the SNMP agent
and used to manage the device. These objects are
defined in a Management Information Base (MIB),
which provides a standard presentation of the
information controlled by the on-board SNMP agent.
SNMP defines both the format of the MIB
specifications and the protocol used to access this
information over
the network.
