Term
Explanation
Fire prevention
switch
Safety device that switches off
electricity inside the building. A fire
protection switch disconnects the
photovoltaic generator at two poles.
This means the voltage of the photo-
voltaic generator can no longer enter
the building and the cables leading
into the building are currentless.
In the event of a fire, this fulfils an
important safety function with respect
to putting out the fire.
Bypass element
Internal component of an aleo module
that keeps the reverse voltage of the
cells in modules at safe levels when
shadowing affects a module or parts
thereof, thereby extending the service
life of the module in the event of
accidental shadowing.
One or more bypass elements may
exist for each module.
DC isolator
Safety device for safely switching off
the electricity of the photovoltaic
generator and the inverter on its DC
side. A DC isolator separates the
photovoltaic generator with two poles
in such a way that both feed cables
are not earthed.
It therefore fulfils an important safety
function during the installation and
maintenance of a photovoltaic gene-
rator.
MPP tracker
Part of a photovoltaic system which
ensures that, even with varying
irradiation levels, the highest output is
extracted from the photovoltaic gene-
rator as is possible under the present
conditions.
MPP trackers are often integrated into
inverters.
Photovoltaics
The direct transformation of light into
electrical energy with the help of solar
cells.
Photovoltaic system A photovoltaic generator inclusive of
its other components and safety
devices such as inverters or DC
isolators.
Photovoltaic
generator
The entirety of all module strings that
are connected to one of more inverter
entries.
Term
Explanation
String fuse
An external component of a photovoltaic
generator. This protects the solar modules
in the event of failures (e.g. faulty inverter,
lightning strike). Direct current string fuses
also offer basic protection against stray
currents and can help prevent fires.
Local regulations may also stipulate the use
of direct current string fuses.
Solar module A solar module is comprised of solar cells
connected in series and is equipped with
safety devices (bypass elements) integrated
within the module.
The cells are protected inside the module
against the weather through a front pane
and an insulating rear side.
The modules described in this manual have
a frame.
