one section can be distributed to the DVI, electrical SDI and optical SDI outputs of the
other or both sections in order to use the unit as a distributor, an electrical-to-optical
converter or an optical-to-electrical converter. The HVM0002C01 can also interchange
the inputs, distributing the input from Section A to the outputs of Section B and
vice-versa.
The DVI interfaces include control lines through which the format of the video being
transmitted can be negotiated. The HVM0002C01 will output a signal via DVI in the
same format in which that signal was received in SDI. The only exception is for the
485i59.94 and 576i50 formats which are not defined in the DVI standard, and some
monitors may not be able to display them. If this occurs and the monitor being used is
able to display progressive formats than the HVM0002C01 deinterlaces the signal and
delivers it in progressive format.
The remaining functions of the HVM0002C01 are detailed in the following.
4.2.1. Audio de-embedder
The HVM0002C01 can select which audio pairs to de-embed and adjust their gain.
This configuration is done separately for the analog audio output and for the audio
embedded in the DVI video signal. The gain can be set from -39.5dB to +24dB is
0.5dB steps. The signal can also be silenced.
The gain is set to 0.0dB by default and this can be very loud depending upon the type
of headphones being used (in particular those with 16Ω impedances can reach
50mW per channel). A safe level for the volume should be ensured before putting the
headphones on.
The HVM0002C01 also provides presence detectors for both audio groups and errors
in each audio pair. Any AES pairs embedded in SDI video signals that are not in PCM
format will be flagged as errors.
4.2.2. Program Peak Meters (PPMs) and timecodes
The HVM0002C01 includes an audio analysis module capable of calculating the True
Peak and Short Term Loudness levels as per RP-128. These values can be displayed
on-screen in the PPMs configured by the user via the control software. Each PPM is
assigned an audio group and the True Peak level for each of the four outputs is
indicated with a solid bar while the Short-Term Loudness level is shown using a
superimposed white line. The scale for the PPMs extends from 0dBFS at the top to
-64dBFS at the bottom with divisions of 10dBFS.
The number of PPMs displayed on-screen (0 to 4), their arrangement (all in a row, two
columns from top to bottom or two rows from left to right), their position (near the
edges of the screen or centered) and the audio group to which they are assigned are
all user-configurable. By default Group 1 is assigned to PPM1, Group 2 to PPM2 and so
on. An automated distribution option exists in which PPMs are only displayed for the
