5 Maintenance
The antenna is designed for a long lifetime of use with minimal maintenance necessary,
however, due to the mechanical nature of its function, certain issues regarding maintenance
need to be addressed from time-to-time. It is highly recommended that the manufacturer be
consulted before attempting major maintenance tasks on the antenna.
The manufacturer can also be contracted to perform maintenance tasks if so desired.
5.1 Cleaning
It is important for continued operational use that the antenna be kept clean and dust free and
free of other abrasive. Dust and other abrasives will damage the antenna‟s deployment
mechanism and result in complications during stowing and deployment.
To ease cleaning, the enclosure of the main antenna assembly can be completely removed
whilst the antenna remains installed. To do this remove the nyloc nuts holding the enclosure
down and lift the enclosure off the antenna. Once cleaning is complete, the enclosure can be
replaced.
Note that the enclosure is not supposed to accomplish a watertight seal between it and the
base plate. Water is supposed to drain out of the enclosure in the gap between the base plate
and the enclosure.
Cleaning can be accomplished via the following methods.
5.1.1 Pressurised air cleaning
The antenna should be frequently cleaned using pressurised air. This can be done whilst the
antenna is stowed with the enclosure lids open, or even whilst the antenna is the deployed
position. Dust and other dirt can be easily removed in this manner on a frequent basis.
5.1.2 High pressure water cleaning
High pressure water spray can be used to clean the antenna. Care must be taken to avoid water
ingress into the AMU and the seals of the mast. It is best to remove the enclosure before using
high pressure water spray.
5.1.3 Manual cleaning with a rag
The antenna can be manually cleaned with a wet rag to remove dust and dirt.
