OLS-5
1-1
1
Description
1.1
Applications
The OLS-5 is an optical LED source for use with
multimode systems in datacom and LAN
applications.
A typical measurement involves determining the
attenuation losses of fiber links and components,
most of which use 50/125
µ
m and 62.5/125
µ
m
fibers. A power meter is required to make these
measurements. We recommend the OLP-5 from
Acterna. In addition to its unmodulated light
mode, the OLS-5 also has two modulation
frequencies for identifying fibers in a fiber bundle,
for example.
1.2
Features
The OLS-5 has two LEDs for 850 and 1300 nm.
They are used for single- and dual-wavelength
operation (TWINtest mode operates at two
wavelengths). The signals from these separate
LEDs pass via a wavelengthselective mirror to a
common output. There, the light is focused in a
defined manner into the fiber end surface in the
connector.
In TWINtest mode, the LEDs are activated in
alternation and a modulation frequency is
superimposed on them. This coding is used by
the OLP-5 to detect the wavelength, allowing
simultaneous measurement of the attenuation at
two wavelengths.
The OLS-5 generates either unmodulated light or
light modulated at a frequency of 1 kHz or 2 kHz.
