LON communication

LON communication is normally used in station automation systems. Optical fiber is used
within the substation as the physical communication link.
The test can only be carried out when the whole communication system is installed. Thus, the
test is a system test and is not dealt with here.

An optical network can be used within the station automation system. This enables
communication with the IEDs through the LON bus from the operator’s workplace, from the
control center and also from other IEDs via bay-to-bay horizontal communication. For LON
communication an SLM card should be ordered for the IEDs.
The fiber optic LON bus is implemented using either glass core or plastic core fiber optic
cables.
