HDD User Password Status 

The security protection is enabled when password is installed. 

8.3.6  

 

HDD Master Password Status 

An installed password can unlock the HDD and override the User password. 

8.3.7  

 

Set User Password Set Master Password 

 

 

  

 

The locking is activated immediately by setting the User Password. An empty 
password (no character) disables the Security feature. A current password has to be 
entered prior. 

The purpose of the Master Password is to allow an administrator to establish a 
password that is kept secret from the user, and which may be used to unlock the 
device if the User Password is lost. Setting of the Master Password does not lock the 
device. A Master Password must be entered prior to the User Password. 

Any password must be up to 32 characters in length. All alphanumeric characters 
and special characters can be used, and distinction is made betw

een upper‐case and 

lower‐case characters.

 

  WARNING 

If a password protected HDD is supposed to be used on different SBC it is highly recommended to test the 

interoperability prior storing critical information. Different SBC might not behave the same even so the 

protection mechanism is defined by ATA specification.

Security Level 

The ATA specification for drives distinguishes between two different security levels, 
High and Maximum. 

8.3.9  

 

High Level Security 

The device can be unlocked via User Password and via Master Password when the 
User Password is forgotten. The information stored on the drive is not touched. 

8.3.10  

 

Maximum Level Security 

The device can be unlocked via User Password and via Master Password when the 
User Password is forgotten. The information on the drive will be erased by writing 
zeros onto all sectors before again allowing access to it. 

This SBC firmware release selects level High per default. A user cannot change it.
