How to create hot spare in LSI WebBIOS
Hot spare disk introduction
A hot spare is an extra, unused drive that is part of the disk subsystem. It is usually in standby mode,
ready for service if a drive fails. Hot spares permit you to replace failed drives without system
shutdown or user intervention.
The hot spare drive does not contain any data when it is idle. There are two types of hot spares
Global hot spares and Dedicated hot spares. When one of the hard drives in the RAID array fails, the
hot spare automatically replaces the failed drive and rebuilds the data originally stored on the failed
drive to the hot spare. Data can only be reconstructed from RAID levels with data redundancy.
Hot spare requirements
1.Use the same model and brand of hard drive as the original drives in the volume set.
2. If same model drive is not available ensure the replacement drive speed matches the original.
3.Confirm the replacement hard drive is listed on 3S visions hard drive compatibility list.
Make sure there is enough storage space on the drive and there is an available slot in the chassis.
Steps to create hot spare:
Press CTRL + H to enter LSI WebBIOS utility, when prompt message appears during boot.
WEB BIOS Logical View screen shows current hard drive information, virtual drives, and
unconfigured drives. (Drive Status – Green: Configured, Blue: Not Configured, Purple: Hot
Spare, Red: Damaged)
Select an unconfigured hard drive, click on the hard drive link to enter the hard drive
properties.
