connections related to this cannot be used on an Internet
Firewall 25. All other parts of this example will work the
same, however.
Protecting an Existing Network with the Internet
Firewall 25
In this example, all your PCs are networked together, and
there is an Internet connection provided by a cable modem.
You have purchased 16 IP addresses, which are being used
on the PCs, from an ISP. The Internet access is used solely
for research purposes, and so you do not need to allow any
inbound access to the network. In addition, you want to
block all NNTP (newsgroup) and IRC access from the
network to prevent misuse of resources, and also want to
use the OfficeConnect Web Site Filter, with access to sites
on this list logged and blocked, under all categories. You
have purchased one year’s subscription to this list, which
you want to activate at the same time that you set up the
Internet Firewall 25. This one-year subscription is additional
to the 30 day free subscription supplied with the Internet
Firewall.
The IP addresses are in the range
172.16.54.10
to
172.16.54.25
inclusive, and these addresses are statically
assigned, and not provided by DHCP. The router address for
the ISP is
172.16.54.1
, and the subnet mask is
255.255.255.0.
In addition, the ISP has an SMTP mail server at
mail.3com.com
and a DNS server at
172.16.54.253.
You want the Internet Firewall 25 to
e-mail the logs and alerts to you automatically.
The Internet Firewall 25 must have its own IP address so
that it can work properly and you can manage it. If all 16 IP
addresses are in use, then the ISP will not support the
addition of this extra IP address. Even if you have
configured the Internet Firewall 25 to use an address in the
correct subnet, there is a risk that the ISP has given this
address to another user. In this case, there are three courses
of action that you can take:
■
Remove Internet access from one of the PCs.
