Getting To Know Your Modem

This chapter introduces you to the features and specifications for the ZyXEL Omni 56K Smart

modem.

1.1 The Omni 56K Smart Modem

The Omni 56K Smart is analog Data/Fax modem used for Internet access via telephone wire. The modem
can run upstream maximum rates of 33.6 kilobits per second (Kbps) and downstream rates of 56Kbps. The
actual rate depends on the line quality, the distance to the exchange and server side configuration.

1.2 Features of the Omni 56K Smart Modem

ZyDAS Sixth Generation Data Pump with V.90 Capability

The Omni 56K Smart modem complies with the V.90 standard for data communications. This means that
your modem is able to communicate at 56K on data communications originating from your service provider.

Microsoft Windows 95/98/2000/Me/XP: RS-232 Plug and Play Compatible

Your modem provides the convenience of simply being connected to the serial port on your computer. The
serial port is a dedicated communications port and allows for optimum data speeds between your computer
and modem.

V.34bis 33.6K Data Transmission Rate

Upstream communication rates of up to 33.6K are possible with the V.34bis protocol. The Omni 56K Smart
modem complies to the V.34bis protocol and this provides an effective transmission speed of 33.6K when
connection is made to a service provider that utilizes the same protocol.

Automatic Data/Fax Call Detection

The Omni 56K Smart modem can automatically answer an incoming call and ascertain whether that call is a
data or a fax call.
