6.2.5 Replacement of the shaft seal
Mechanical seal
If liquid leaks out at the mechanical seal, then the seal is damaged and must be replaced.
Stuffing box
If the leakage rate cannot longer be set correctly, the packing is worn and must be replaced.
NOTE:
Non timely replacement leads to increased wear on the shaft sleeve.
Replace the packing
DANGER: Take pump out of operation
Repack the stuffing box only after the shutdown and depressurisation of the pump, and only
when the pump body has reached the ambient temperature.
1.
Remove the stuffing box gland nuts and push the stuffing box gland to the other side.
2.
Remove the soft packing.
3.
Insert the first soft packing with the cut face up.
NOTE:
A slight clearance between the soft packing and the shaft is required. This can be achieved by
reducing the height of the packing rings with light hammer blows.
4.
Insert every following soft packing ring at a 90° position in relation to the previous soft
packing.
5.
Replace the stuffing box gland and fasten the nuts by hand.
6.
Perform the
next start-up like the first start-up specified in Section 5.3.
6.3
Long periods of inactivity
1.
Close the on-off valve on the suction side.
2.
Completely empty the unit.
3.
Protect the unit against freezing.
4.
Before restarting the unit, check that the shaft is rotating freely, without mechanical
impediments.
NOTE:
If the unit has not been used for more than 2 years, replace the grease in the bearings.
