DIGITAL CONTROL SYSTEM
Your 270 ECS comes equipped with the digital control system discussed in Chapter 3 of this
manual. The switch pod is located on the console forward of the helm. The control unit and
accessory fuse block are mounted on the rigging wall behind the console insert and can be
accessed through the opening beneath the helm. The boat’s wiring harnesses are connected to
the control unit and accessory fuse blocks through a terminal strip. The terminal strip is
labeled, to make it easier to identify the circuits. Wiring diagrams are provided on pages 11-12
to help you to trace circuits when needed.
BILGE PUMPS / FLOAT SWITCHES
Your 270 ECS is equipped with two 1500 GPH bilge pumps and two 500 GPH bilge pumps.
Each pump is connected to a float switch which automatically triggers the pump when water
comes to rest in the bilge. The float switches are connected to the battery management panel
through the hull harness and receive power from the fuses along the top of the panel. These
fuses are constantly energized and ensure the safety of your boat even when the battery
switches are in the “off” position. The pumps can be manually engaged using the switch pod
located on the console.
The aft bilge pumps are located behind the aft rigging compartment and can accessed
through the access hatches located on the aft transom wall beneath the livewell and fishbox.
The wiring for these pumps is secured on the inboard side of the engine mounting bracket
which is visible from the opening. The forward pumps are located beneath the cabin liner. The
port bilge pump can be reached through the inspection port installed in the floor aft of the
marine head. To reach the starboard pump remove the berth cushions, and the filler board
installed over the forward liner cutout. Once this is complete, remove the inspection port which
protects the pump.
Inspect the operation of your bilge pumps and their connections at least annually. To do so,
activate the pump by momentarily lifting the arm on the float switch, then check the operation
using the switch pod. When testing, do not allow the pumps to run dry for more than two to
three seconds. Extended dry operation can result in damage to your pump. Keeping your bilge
areas clean can also help extend the life of your pump.
VOLVO™ SEA KEY™ SYSTEM
All Volvo™ powered vessels include their Sea Key™ system which functions as a early warn-
ing system, tracking device, emergency system, and informational package. Please review the
operational instructions included in your “Owner’s Portfolio”. This system requires that two
additional float switches be mounted on top of the outboard motor mounts, just aft of the fuel
tank bulkhead. These are wired in parallel and connected to the Volvo™ Sea Key™ system as
part of the high water alarm. These switches do not engage the bilge pumps, but should be
checked regularly in conjunction with Volvo’s™ notification center.
FRESHWATER SYSTEM
The freshwater pump and wiring are located behind the access door in the port deckwing.
The pump is connected to the 32 gallon freshwater tank installed in the starboard sponson for-
ward of the gas tank. The tank is filled through a fitting located on the starboard deckwing. Sim-
ilar to residential well pumps, the freshwater pump pressurizes the system to 40 psi. then shuts
down until the pressure drops below that level. Most owners leave the pump “on” throughout
the day, and use the system when necessary. On the 270 ECS, the freshwater pump feeds the
cockpit shower located on the port cockpit wall and the marine head. To view the layout of the
freshwater system see the drawing on page 16.
