Alignment should be carried out with a good quality microphone, with a flat response at least
from 80 Hz to about 15kHz, placed about 5 m in front of the speaker stack being tuned, andat a
height mid-way between the drivers covering the two bands in question. We will call this the
Reference Point Microphone. When using a RPM, only one stack at a time should be tuned.
Thisis truefor band level setting, time alignment and setting crossover frequencies.
The RPM usuallyneeds tobe movedbetweenmeasurements.
Designed to work in conjunction with a RPM, this device outputs broadband (pink) noise into
the PA via the mixing desk, and monitors the acoustic result via a multichannel frequency
analyzer/meter. The
ULTRA-CURVE does all this and more.
Sweepable throughout the audio spectrum, this sinewave generator is simple, inexpensive,
and may be plugged into the mixing console via a line input. If its output level varies with
frequency, you could patch a compressor/limiter with slow time constants and massive ratio
between it andthe console toclamp it. You will alsoneed a RPM.
When auditioning the overall sound of a system, besure to move about the auditorium to check
for hot and cold spots. The sound should be optimized for the average listening position,
without beingoverly compromised elsewhere. Often this means running the system inmono.
At all times, having made technical adjustments using instrumentation (SWO, RTA, RPM,
meters and LEDs), use your ears tocheck that the result is reasonable.
There is+/- 12 dB cut/boost available on both inputs.
Usually, mixer output sensitivity and power amplifier input sensitivity will be matched: 0 dB
output on the desk will produce 0 dB on a power amplifier's meter (if it has one). In which case
the
should be set to have a neutral effect on system gain, and all
input and
output level controls shouldread zero.
Where the desk (or DJ console!) is running at -10 dBV (semi-pro level ), but the power amps
are set up for +4 dBu operation, you will be looking for the crossover to provide up to 14 dB of
gain. Try setting theinput level to +12 dB for starters.
If you are not sure what sensitivity your console has, try the following procedure:mute all WCR
35 outputs. Drive the console with a constant signal (SWO, RTA or even music) until the onset
of clipping on the console's levelmeters (usually indicatedby a clip LED, or when the meters hit
the roof!). adjust the input level to the
until its input CLIP LED just lights. Back off the
console to normal operating level (0 dB). Now both console and
have (roughly)
matchingsensitivities.
Carry out the aboveprocedure withthe power amps turned off!

ULTRA-CURVE
programmable analyzer/equalizer which no self-respecting PA should bewithout!) toenable
