SYNC
Cruising speed
Operating the engine at maximum RPM should be avoided since it is
both uneconomical and uncomfortable. Volvo Penta recommends a
cruising speed approximately 200 rpm lower than maximum rpm at
wide open throttle (WOT). Depending on hull type, choice of propeller,
load and conditions etc. the maximum engine speed at top speed can
vary, but it should be within the maximum RPM range.
Maximum RPM range: 3,700–3,900 rpm
Synchronizing engine speed
If the boat is equipped with twin engines comfort can be improved by
synchronizing the engines to the same engine speed. To make this
process easier there is an integral synchronization function which au-
tomatically sets the engines to the same engine speed (RPM).
The synchronization function is always automatically activated
from start (Sync button lights up).
In practice however the synch function does not take effect until both
engines have an engine speed over 800 rpm and the control levers
are set so that the engines are both running at approximately* the
same speed.
If these conditions are met the engine speed of the starboard engine
(the slave) will automatically be adjusted to the speed of the port en-
gine (master). The synchronization is automatically disengaged when
any condition required is no longer met or when the engine speed ex-
ceeds 3,500 rpm. When the conditions are again fulfilled the synchro-
nization is re-engaged.
The synchronization function can also be deactivated manually. Press
in the Sync button (for at least 2 seconds). The lamp in the button will
go out and synchronization is disengaged within 5 seconds. Repeat
the procedure to activate the synchronization function.
* Difference in engine speed between the engines should be less than approximately
50 rpm at 800/1100 rpm and less than 200 rpm at 1100–3500 rpm.
