This chapter describes the Volvo Penta control systems available for your Volvo Penta engine. Two of them are
electronic and the third is mechanical. All have a shift function and engine speed control combined in the same
lever where the shift function can be disengaged so only the engine speed is affected.
Control functions. Electronic controls
Shifting and engine speed are controlled with the same lever (1).
N = Neutral position/engine idle speed position The propulsion
system/reverse gear are disengaged and the engine is run-
ning at idling speed.
F = Drive/reverse gear engaged for movement ahead.
R = Drive/reverse gear engaged for movement astern.
T = Control of engine speed (RPM)
Note. If the on-board diagnostics (OBD) warning lamp in the con-
trol panel indicates with a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) that the
control requires calibration, follow the instructions in the section:
Fault-tracing/Diagnostics.
Disengaging the shift function. Electronic controls
Press in the green Neutral button on the control panel while mov-
ing the lever (1) forward to the shift position (F). The Neutral button
can now be released. The Neutral warning lamp button will flash to
confirm that the shift function is disengaged and the lever only con-
trols engine speed* (RPM).
* Maximum engine speed (RPM) 2000 rpm in this position.
When the lever is moved back to the neutral position it will auto-
matically re-engage.
IMPORTANT! Take care not to engage the drive/reverse
gear by mistake.
